DIY Frugal House Product Tips For The Home

  • Take Vaseline and rub it all over the rubbers of your refrigerator. This will create a better seal and also soften the rubber of your refrigerators so that it will go back to being soft and seal better.
  • Wetting a paint roller with water and then rolling it all out on a wall, until all the water splatters out, before you roll it into your paint pan, will stop you from getting splatters all down your arms and all over you when you paint ceilings.
  • Using beer in a jar lid in the corner of your balcony will keep the beer bugs from your food when you are eating.
  • An inch of dish soap and water in a spray bottle will stop bees attacking you. The soapy water makes their wings heavy and they drop to the ground. I used this many times while I painted houses and run into a bees nest unexpectedly. I don't like doing this now that our bees are disappearing, If you have a better way to keep bees away, please let me know.
  • You can make a circle of mothballs, around the area of a BBQ picnic and mosquitoes or insects will not fly over the line. You need to space these mothballs approximately 2 inches apart around the diameter of where you want to have your party. This really works, I have done this in Florida many times around a pool party, three foot circle bigger than the pool area.
  • Sprinkling baking soda on your rug before you vacuum, letting it sit for 10 minutes and then vacuuming, will take out the smells from your carpet from animals or stinky feet. Very good smell retardent for cat litter boxes also.
  • Three cups of amonia in a bowl left overnight in your oven ,will loosen the left-on grim and can be wiped off with newspapers in the morning.
  • Baking soda and vinegar will unclog a drain.
  • Borax in small cups or jar lids left under your couch or chairs will rid your furniture of fleas.
  • Cayenne pepper sprinkled on window ledges will stop fruit flies and insects coming in your screens.
  • Vinegar and water will clean windows better and wiping them off with newspapers leaves no streaks.
  • Toothepaste will fill nail holes and you can even paint over it.
  • A cup of Lemon juice in the laundry will whiten clothes.
  • Put your sneakers in a tied pillowcase in the dryer to stop the banging of the shoes.
  • Add a big dried towel to your dryer load and it will dry your clothes faster with less cost to run your dryer. You can also hang your clothes on a rack to save money. I do this.
  • Save money to cook baked potatoes and drive a steel nail threw them before roasting them at 400 degrees.
  • Cut off the top of your frozen food bags an inch down from the top and use the top cutting for a twist tie. Never look for a twist tie again.
  • Two forks with the prongs locked into each other makes a great whipper.
  • Use your own clothes for packing materials when you move.
  • I personally have used all of these tips myself and they all work.
